Background of the Study
Oil exploration has significantly transformed the socio-economic landscape in Nembe, Bayelsa State, bringing both opportunities and challenges. While the economic benefits of oil extraction are evident, its impact on cultural practices is profound. Traditional rituals, community ceremonies, and indigenous lifestyles are disrupted by industrial activities, environmental degradation, and population displacement. Local communities, whose identities are closely tied to ancestral land and cultural practices, are experiencing cultural erosion as oil companies expand their operations. Recent studies indicate that oil exploration not only affects the environment but also reshapes social structures and cultural traditions (Obi, 2023; Agba, 2024). This study investigates the multifaceted impact of oil exploration on cultural practices in Nembe, examining both the adverse effects and potential adaptive measures (Igho, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Oil exploration in Nembe has led to significant disruptions in traditional cultural practices, including the displacement of communities and degradation of ancestral lands. These changes threaten the preservation of indigenous rituals and social structures integral to the community's identity. Despite the economic gains from oil extraction, the adverse cultural impacts remain underexplored. This study seeks to assess the extent of oil exploration’s influence on cultural practices and to identify policy measures that can mitigate negative impacts while promoting sustainable development.
